AAM’s Major Accomplishments In 2011

Developed and introduced legislation to amend the Housing Law of Michigan to include townships under the law, limit registration fees, allow increased time between inspections and cap inspection fees.

Initiated coalition and legislative effort to amend Tax Tribunal statute to increase interest rates on tax appeals, with the goal of speeding the case resolution process.

Opposed legislation requiring landlords to provide additional, unnecessary notifications in foreclosure situations.

Filed amicus briefs in two court cases relating to Tax Tribunal decisions. The first case involves a decision allowing a special assessment to be levied on an apartment community using questionable value rationale. The second case involves a decision that destroys the statutory mandate that transferred properties be assessed using the same valuation method used to value all other property of the same classification.

Advocated for replacement of the Michigan Business Tax (MBT).

Organized members in multiple local communities to advocate against unreasonable local apartment inspection ordinances.

Partnered with DTE Energy and Consumers Energy in educating members on no cost/low cost energy efficiency programs offered by utilities to multifamily rental properties.

Successfully opposed legislation to allow local rent control and inclusionary zoning.

Organized new Southfield Apartment Forum.

Educated members on new Lead: Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule.

Provided Builder Continuing Competency and Real Estate Continuing Education classes.
