AAM Major Accomplishments in 2010

• Successfully organized grassroots effort to communicate to the Michigan Congressional Delegation the industry’s opposition to proposed increase in federal carried interest tax rate

• Organized members in multiple local communities to advocate against unreasonable local apartment inspection ordinances

• Participated in work group to draft and enact legislation to combat energy theft

• Initiated new electronic newsletter for members

• Partnered with DTE Energy and Consumers Energy in educating members on no cost/low cost energy efficiency programs offered by utilities to    multifamily rental properties

• Successfully opposed legislation to allow local rent control and inclusionary zoning

• Stopped legislation which would have eliminated the loss provision in the tax code for decreases in occupancy in calculating taxable value of rental   properties

• Participated in a work group to craft compromise legislation allowing for release of a tenant threatened by domestic violence, stalking or sexual assault

• Advocated for an accelerated phase out of the Michigan Business Tax (MBT) Surcharge, as well as a residential rental property MBT deduction    for passthrough expenses, such as utilities, property taxes, insurance, etc.

• Educated members on new Lead: Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule and provided Certified Renovator classes ■
